Lesson from Hollywood (1) – “Values, a beacon in the haze”

In Hollywood movies they use some really disturbing cliches. As a youngster, I used to want to “throw up” when I heard them but finally I see that there is significant substance behind them. After many-many years I admit I found that they are important, of value and true meaning and not at all silly.

So, in the Hollywood romantic movie scene actors often mention how they need to “find themselves”, “be themselves”, “reinvent themselves”. It is one of the most often used cliches, especially in dialogues of previously inlove couples in the verge of separation (it still annoys me to listen to these cliches). Usually the characters request some “space” or “time” (ask for space-time Einstein) so that they will be able to accomplish finding themselves or being themselves again.

I used to turn to the screen and shout to the actors: ”but you are you stupid, what do you want to find?”. It took me 30 years to understand what they referred to. Now I know I should have asked them “what have you lost?” instead.

Although I still feel that the copywriters of these movies use these phrases only because they sound nice, in the “marathon” documentary movie that our professional life is, they really do mean a lot.

Business Hardships Call for Difficult Decisions

It is hard to be in business and keep up with the developments around you. Many are the risks that need to be undertaken daily and a lot of us may feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the developments and of the possible outcomes that could go wrong. What if they do go wrong? Sometimes the answer to this question scares us.

“When you face hardship, difficult decisions, seemingly impossible outcomes, you turn to your mentor for coaching, or if you are more experienced you ask trusted peers for advice and a friendly arm around the shoulder, or if you are even more experienced you turn to your partners for help. But for leaders, it is lonelier than that. Often there is no-one to turn to. Some turn to fate or chance for good luck, some pray but real leaders turn to themselves and question their own values.”

As a manager, as a leader you should really consider what the future you wish to create, what the future you wish to experience is. Your past experiences may have brought you where you are now but you are a different person from what you used to be. You are your character and values now. So make your decisions based on who you currently are and what you want to become next rather than what you believe historical data depicts.

Your character and your values go far beyond the limits of your experiences and will help you overcome hardship and difficulties. The context you’re in will not.

The clutter around you is best cleared using the projection of yourself in the future. This way you can see through things and not through the filter of things.

Take time to Find Yourself and Be Yourself

I still cannot believe I wrote that. It sounds corny.

Lead by example. Be your own person and not a fake. Take time to find yourself and be yourself. If you feel you are losing yourself and your values, take time to define yourself.

Ambiguity and doubt are best solved when you look into your values for answers. Base your decisions on your values as they are the both the best weapon in your arsenal against ambiguity and the best guide on the road to the future you wish for.
